Its a really tough decision working with a small client and a big client. I also feel a lot more pressure with the bigger client as they usually have worked with designers before and have been "in the game" a lot longer. As such, I feel like I need to up my game with them. I personally like the smaller clients because they tend to be more fun with the project and allow you to steer them in the right direction.
I guess creative freedom is a big point with me, solely because, I have a somewhat big client currently who has their branding to a tee, and they are allowing us to add our own personal twist to it, but I believe we've done the redesign about 4 times now =/
However, they are giving me one hefty paycheck, so I guess just balancing it out so you don't pull your hairs out is what matterse.

Brilliant. Nicely put. What kind of clients you choose also depends on your personality. If you like a lot of structure and discipline, you will tend to lean towards the big guys - but if you are more of a creative person who thrives on risks and uncertainties, you will find the small guys more to your taste. Of course this is just a thumb rule.
